Social Progress: Community Causes that Matter
Eric Nelson is an active leader in his community. Rather than viewing himself as ‘a voice for the voiceless,’ Eric aims to be a sounding board when it comes to his social justice efforts. Focused on empowerment, he believes that social justice advocates should amplify the messages of those in need — instead of creating their own. In Eric’s experience, this approach is effective in pushing for social progress because it keeps the public’s attention on current issues and needs within the community.
Ending Homelessness
The story of a homeless individual is often multifaceted. What led this person to be without a home isn’t always a simple answer. Eric Nelson understands that each person, and his/her story, is unique. In his years of volunteering at local homeless shelters and soup kitchens, Eric has met plenty of homeless individuals. By taking the time to talk to different people in his community, he has come to realize that there are numerous factors that lead to homelessness. In particular, the two most prevalent issues tend to be mental health and economic hardship. That’s why he’s particularly passionate about advocating for economic development through mental health reform. By working towards these causes, Eric also amplifies the importance of affordable housing, which offers an immediate solution to a current problem.
Mental Health Reform
While a ‘quick fix’ to the homelessness issue is great, that doesn’t mean it’s sustainable. As a social justice advocate, Eric Nelson is more focused on solutions for the long term.
